Sow Radishes

February 26, 2018 - March 4, 2018

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every 3 weeks that begins at 12:00am on Monday, repeating until September 30, 2018

Erica’s Notes

Earliest spring is a good time to take a gamble on your first direct seeding radishes. Try a pretty mix like Valentine’s Day or one of the heirloom French Breakfast types. Only sow a few radishes at a time – how many do you really want, you know? – but sow them often. I aim for about every 3 to 4 weeks. Later in the season you can inter-sow them with carrots or parsnips which take forever to germinate.

If you forget your radishes and they go to seed – just go with it. You’ll get a second shot at a harvest when your radishes grow something called radish seed pods. These are green, fleshy pods where eventually radish seeds will develop and grow. While young and immature they taste something like mildy peppery tender green beans. I think radish seed pods are actually a nicer crop than the root.  Try them stir-fried!
